1 Peter 5:5-7

Karmir Kiraki (translated Red Sunday) is the name given to the fourth Sunday of Easter in our church. On the one hand, red is the color of martyrs, on the other hand, it is the color of those who go to war to protect their sanctuaries: family, homeland and faith.

The daily readings include the fifth chapter of the First Epistle of St. Peter the Apostle. In this chapter he speaks about the humility and confidence of Christians in the face of any adversity. Something that still gives us strength today.

Christians have been persecuted and harassed since the crucifixion of Christ. The apostle speaks about it, he even speaks of the blazing fire that comes over the first Christians (1 Peter 4:12-19). But he teaches pastors and the church to accept suffering in the name of Christ with joy and hope and to treat one another with mutual respect. Paradoxically, he encourages the oppressed and persecuted people in a special way, saying: "But everyone meets one another in humility! For God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Cast all your worries on him, for he cares for you!” (1 Peter 5:5-7).

Persecution and tribulation in one form or another are still experienced by Christians all over the world today. In some places this persecution is carried out in a more "civilized" way, in others through violence and bloodshed. But the message is always the same: "Cast all your anxiety on him, for he cares for you" (1 Pet. 5.7)!

It is important to understand that humility, as understood and preached in the church, does not mean to make us small, only humble. Before the face of the Son of man, the righteous par excellence, who takes upon himself the sins of the world and suffers for the sins of the world, every Christian should be aware of who he or she really is, namely a child of God, and what boundless divine grace he or she is she becomes partaker through Christ. Humility is therefore the modesty of the recipient who accepts the external circumstances without complaining about them and with full trust in God who takes care of them.

So Red Sunday invites us to see our life as a struggle against evil. In this struggle we should humbly endure what is coming, with hope that God will never leave us alone. Whoever understands humility in this way enjoys a life of frugality, contentment and devotion.
