"If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Comforter to be with you forever:" (John 14․15-17).
Dear sisters and brothers, today is Pentecost. Fifty days after the miraculous resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the comforting Holy Spirit appeared to the disciples.
“And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a mighty storm, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And tongues appeared to them, divided and as of fire, and sat on each of them, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit inspired them to speak” (Acts 2.2-4).
One of the symbols of the Holy Spirit in the Bible is the wind. The word "spirit" means wind or breath in Hebrew, that is, the Holy Spirit is literally the wind or breath of God (John 20:22).
The fathers of our church see a very beautiful comparison in the working of one of the most powerful forces in the world, the wind and the Holy Spirit.
Wind is a transformative force, and a sustained torrent of wind can shift giant sand dunes or erode mountain peaks. The Holy Spirit works in our lives in much the same way. Sometimes it is very difficult to break our stereotypes, but God constantly refines our soul in the spiritual sense, frees it from unnecessary worries, transforms, repairs and prepares it for spiritual life.
Wind is also an inexhaustible source of energy and people have been using the power of the wind to generate energy since ancient times. Likewise, the "wind of God" that blows into our lives gives strength and strengthens us in the spiritual life. As the fathers say. “Without the Holy Spirit we can do nothing. We are a ship without wind, a branch without branches, coal without fire.
Wind is also a destructive force. Certainly we had the opportunity to see the devastation caused by strong storms and tornadoes. The Holy Spirit also has this destructive power. And sometimes we really need the Holy Spirit to blow his destructive power into our lives, destroying all the barriers and obstacles that the enemy is putting up around us and creating an obstacle to our fellowship with God.
The Sacrament of Holy Baptism is a special Pentecost for every Christian by which that person is cleansed of all Adamic and prior sins and becomes a Christian, a follower of Christ, and a member of the Church.
Dear sisters and brothers, on this day of Pentecost let us remember that the Holy Spirit, the breath of God and the wind invisibly blow into our lives. May the Holy Spirit fill us all with his graces, keep us in love and unity. Amen.
