Sunday is Barekendan, Lent of the Ancestors (Barekendan Aratschavorats Pahots). The first Lent of the year, which is only handed down in the Armenian Church and commemorates the three weeks before the Great Lent and the fasting of the Armenians before their baptism, before their Christianization.

Even if the strict period of Lent is about to begin (originally only bread and salt were allowed on these days), the daily reading begins with the jubilation of the prophet Isaiah, who says: “I rejoice in the Lord, and my soul is glad in my God; for he has put on me the garments of salvation, and clothed me in the mantle of righteousness, adorned as a bridegroom with a priestly headdress, and as a bride resplendent in her jewels" (jes. 61:10).

As then, in the time of Isaiah, we find little joy in our everyday life when we read the news, when we hear from friends and relatives about the terrible situation, the suffering of the people in Armenia, Artsakh, Ukraine and elsewhere around the world or when we focus on our inner being during Lent. As then, we also ask today: "Does it make sense to put our hope in God or has He forgotten us because of our wrongdoing, because of our sins?".

But if we do that Gospel of John 6:16-21 read, which tells us about Jesus' walk on the water, it becomes clear to us that God will never forget us. Rather, we are the ones who, like the disciples of Christ, forget Him. But HE is always with us and rushes to help even when we don't expect him. Isaiah already knew that, so he looked ahead. He put his hope in God and saw the redemption and victory of Christ's resurrection and all that that resurrection brings to mankind. So he could say, "I rejoice in the Lord."

Later we also read in St. Paul: "Rejoice in the Lord", namely in Jesus Christ. There is much in and around us that spoils our joy. But in the darkness of hopelessness and terror, we see the light of salvation in the Lord. What God gives us, what HE does for us every day, fills us with hope, makes us thankful and happy. Our God forgives the guilt that attaches to us and for which we seek forgiveness from him. He crosses out forever the failures we have behind us and what has sometimes also marked our lives.

We know that during Lent we have the opportunity to turn from the darkness of the world and choose the light of the knowledge of God. For only He, our God and Savior, gives us what we need forever. So let us choose the light of God knowledge and it will make us happy from within and that joy will last forever. Amen.
