Central commemoration in Frankfurt of the Holy Martyrs of the Armenian Genocide

On April 23, the central commemoration event for the Holy Martyrs of the Armenian Genocide took place in the historic Paulskirche in Frankfurt. As in previous years, the Diocese of the Armenian Church, the Central Council of Armenians and the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia in Germany invited together.

The event was opened by the chairman of the ZAD, Jonathan Spangenberg, who welcomed those present on behalf of the organizers. In his speech he emphasized the importance and necessity of always keeping alive the memory of the genocide and went into current developments in Armenia. He appealed to German politicians to condemn Azerbaijan's aggressive stance.

Then the Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia HE Viktor Yenkibaryan addressed the participants. In his speech, he addressed the role of the Bundestag's recognition of genocide in 2016 and explained Armenia's efforts in promoting the international genocide prevention agenda.

Further words of welcome were addressed to the participants by the President of the State Parliament of Hesse, Ms. Astrid Wallmann (via video message) and the Minister of Justice of the State of Hesse, Prof. Roman Poseck on behalf of Prime Minister Boris Rhein.

Finally, the Primate of the Armenian Church in Germany, HE Bishop Serovpé Isakhanyan, addressed those present with his words of remembrance. With the Easter message “Christ has risen from the dead”, the primate called on everyone to continue to commemorate in the light of faith in the resurrection and strengthened by hope in order to fight for recognition and demand justice. The bishop spoke about the current geopolitical developments around Armenia and Artsakh. “We cannot allow Azerbaijan to depopulate Nagorno-Karabakh in the eyes of the civilized world in the 21st century. Armenians in Artsakh should not experience the same crime that our ancestors experienced more than a hundred years ago. That is why I appeal today to Germany, the international community and the churches to do everything possible to curb Azerbaijan's bellicose rhetoric and idealistic politics and to seek peaceful and just solutions to the conflict."

After his speech, the bishop held a prayer of intercession and asked the Holy Martyrs to intercede with the Heavenly Father for Armenia and Artsakh, as well as for other regions of the world where people are suffering as a result of armed conflicts and threats.

The memorial event was musically accompanied by Trio Manima with works by Komitas and JS Bach.

Around 350 guests took part in the commemoration event, including members of the Hesse state parliament, Frankfurt city council members and representatives of various sister churches.
